CLERK'S DISMISSAL.
EFFECT OF NEW LAWS. BOROUGH COUNCDL'S PROTEST. "A lot of eggs may be broken and a lot of omelets eaten, but it seems, to be a peculiar way to bring social security in by sacking men." said the Mayor, Mr. S. Evans, at last evening's meeting of the Papakura Borough Council, when he reported that the clerk in charge of the local unemployment bureau had received notice that his services would not be reqtiired after March 31.
The Mayor said he had been approached by the postmaster, Mr. G. H. Davis, to see whether the council could help in the matter. Knowing the Prime Minister was in Auckland he sent the following telegram:—"Mr. A. C. Foster, clerk in charge of the Unemployment Bureau at Papakura for the last seven years, has just received word that he terminates his services on March 31, His work has been highly spoken of and he has a wife and family of four young children. This is a very hard blow to a young man with a family to be thrown out of work. Public sentiment here is definitely roused at the dismissal of a worthy public servant. As Mayor, I strongly appeal to your sense of justice and fair play to arrange for cancellation of the' dismissal notice in Mr. Foster's case." The Prime Minister, said Mr. Evans, replied as follows:—"Your telegram regarding the dismissal of Mr. A. C. Foster received. The question what can be done to avoid dismissals of this ■ntture is at present receiving the attention of the Government." The Mayor added that although they had not yet succeeded in getting Mr Foster's dismissal cancelled, it was probable the Government would «ive some early consideration to the case.
