MOUNT LYELL OUTPUT. COMPARISON" OF QUARTERS. Tn the last quarter of 1938 Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company, Ltd.. treated 272.926 tons of ore in the mill, cathode copper produced in the refinery for th<» period being 3068 tons. A slight reduction in production compared with that of the preceding quarter would be accounted for by the intervention of the holiday period in the last quarter of the year. It is interesting to note, however, that the throughput of ore shows an increase of ."2.000 tons compared with that of the corresponding quarter of 1037, while production of cathode copper was slightly higher than that of the 1937 quarter. This is a reflection of the company'e policy of treating larger tonnages to compensate for the lower grade of ore, which, as the reserves of the North Lyell mine approach exhaustion, is being drawn increasingly from the "West I-yell open-cuts. In the following table results for the quarter ended December 31, the first af tlic> current financial year, are compared with those of the preceding quarter and of the corresponding period of 1937 :— Dec. 31, Sep. 30, Dee. 31. 1f(37. 1938. 1935.
