TIE FOR SHIELD.

NATIONAL SWIMMNG.

CHAMPIONSHIPS AT ROTORUA. FEW AUCKLAND SUCCESSES. The New Zealand intermediate and junior swimming championship meeting concluded in the Blue Bath at Rotorua on Saturday night with a joint victory 'by Otago and Bay of Plenty for the War Memorial Shield, each scoring seven points, Auckland had only one point. The New Zealand junior backstroke record was broken, by M. Loffley, a Kotorua Maori lad. The scores in the shield contest were as follows:— Otago, 7; Bay of Plenty, 7; Southland, 4; South Canterbury, Wellington and Auckland, one- each. The competition was very exciting, the result being in doubt right until the final championship event was swum. Swimming for Auckland, K. Williams was runner-up to S. Sewell, Bay of Plenty, for the 220 yards intermediate boys' title, Aliases Norma Griiiin and Marjorie Black were second and third respectively to Miss Christine Garvin, of Otago, for the 100 yards intermediate girls' title, and Miss J. Cowan was third to Miss N. Peat, Otago, in the 50 yards junior girte , breaststroke. Less than a year ago, Mark Bell, of Auckland, put up the junior boys' record for 75 yarde backstroke of 58s. On Saturday night Loffley reduced it by 2 2-os, taking 55 3-ss. In this race the Aueklander, L. Mteks, was last of four' contestants. The meeting had several memorable features. There was the keen competition in many of the events, even if some of the competitors were not to the standard of previous years; there was the brilliant swimming of Christine Garvin, a runaway victor in intermediate events, who already rivals Kathleen Grey, and has all the attributes of a great swimmer; there was the equally brilliant sprinting of the Maori lads, Jim Whiti and M. Loffley, who should soon smash the intermediate and junior records respectively for 100 yards. There was also the outstanding success in winning titles of these two boys and another Maori lad, Sonny Sewell, whose ability reflected the skill of the widely-popular Kotorua coach, Jack Perrin. Extremely encouraging ability was shown by several of the junior competitors, particularly Beryl Westerby, of Invercargill, and Betty Owens, of Auckland. Williams made a big effort to catch Sewell in the intermediate boys' furlong. However, at all times, the winner was able to muster sufficient speed to keep well ahead of his opponents, and he won by four yards in 2.37 1-5. This was a fair swim, being five seconds slower than standard. Williams was officially timed at 2.40. Another Auckland entrant, B. Clench, did not qualify for the final. The Aucklanders, Misses Norma Griffin, of Kaikohe, and Marjorie Black, were not allowed by Miss Christine Garvin to be within several yards of her. Both the Auckland girle tried gamely, but the champion is a swimmer of the first order. At the finish she had six yards to spare from Miss Griffin, who beat Miss Black by a yard. The time for Miss Griffin was 70 4-ss, and for Miss Black, 71 4-ss. Results were:— 220 Yards Intermediate Boys' Free-style Championship.—First heat: W. Hart, Canterbury, 1 ; J.
