MAORI CHIEFTAINESS.

DIES AT KAKARIKI PA.

AGE NOT LESS THAN 100.

(From Our Correspondent.)

PALMER STON NORTH, Sunday.

With the death at the Kakariki Pa of Chieftainess Mihi-Ki-Tiirangi-Mata-wha, the Maoris settled along the west coast of the North Island have lost the last direct link connecting them with the colourful days of the noted warrior chief Te Rauparaha.

The age of the chieftainess had been calculated at not less than 100 years. She had resided at Kakariki Pa for over 70 years, with her late uncle, Toa Rangitira, a chief who -was a direct descendant of the Ngati-Toa tribe, of Kawhia.

Her birthplace was Otaki, and her mother was numbered among those who made famous the march from Kawhia to Otaki when Te Rauparaha decided to settle along the west coast.
