DE FRIEND'S FIRST CUP

BEAT MALAGIGI THERE.

SURPRISES AT ELLE^SLIE.

FAVOURITES FAIL AT START.

OWERE COMES HOME IN FERRY.

Close finishes in the first two events at the Auckland Racing Club s meeting at Ellerslie to-day provided a good opening for the day s racing. Pasture, the third favourite, made amends for previous disappointments in the first race, narrowly beating Bronwen and Veritable. In the second event, too, there was a close finish, only necks in each case separating Baldric, the winner, Tutor and Taillight. Like Pasture, Baldric returned a good price to his backers. Though the sky was overcast for the start of the racing, rain held off during the early stages, and the track was in excellent racing condition. The threatening conditions had effect on the attendance, which, however, was satisfactory. Bill Grattan, eighth favourite, surprised at the Forbury Park trots, Dunedin, by beating the fancied horses, Shadeland and Violet Wrack, in the opening event. At the Pahiatua race meeting Kurrawong, Jeanne and Mataroa were the early winners. Trots are being held at Richmond Park, Nelson, where the first successes were scored by Sylvan and Misdeal.
