THE HOLIDAY.
MANY ATTRACTIONS.
REGATTA ON MONDAY.
VARIETY OF SPORTS EVENTS.
Anniversary Pay, on Monday, will be a holiday for many Auckland people, but it is not a statutory holiday, although its observation has been provided for in some awards and industrial agreements.
While Anniversary Day has, by custom, been observed on the Monday when the date falls on Sunday, the legal position is that businesses are not required to observe a holiday on Monday unless there are together in the same award provision requiring the observance of Anniversary Day as a holiday, and the observance of Anniversary Day on a Monday when it falls on a Sunday.
One of the big attractions for Monday will be the Auckland Anniversary Regatta, which will be oihcially opened by the Governor-General, Viscount. Galway, at 9.15 a.m. There will be 44 events, with a record of 345 entries. The tug, William C. Daldy, as the official boat, will be anchored in Hobeon Bay, hear the Rosolution buoy, instead of having the flagship moored off the Calliope Dock as in years past. Part of the programme will be the holding of the naval swimming carnival and sports off the eastern tide deflector, near the Koyal Akarana Yacht Clubhouse.
At Orakei Basin the model yacht championships and handicap races will be sailed, senior and juniors competing. In St. Mary's Bay, the midget sailing dinghys and frostbite classes will compete.
At Ellerslie the Auckland Racing Club's mid-summer meeting will be continued, and a very large attendance is expected.
Tennis championships will be continued at the Stanley Street courts, and a full series of matches will be played under the auspices of the Auckland Cricket Association, three of the main fixtures being at Eden Park. In _ the event of fine weather it is certain that many people will patronise the beaches and holiday resorts close to Auckland. There will be water excursions to favourite places, and picture theatres and cabarets will offer special programmes-
Many people will have the advantage of a long week-end and three days of holidays. This is particularly advantageous to motorists, and many plans have been made for trips, into the country.
