PROMISING PACER.

N. Cunningham produced a promising maiden pacer at the Matinee meeting in Don Walla, the firet of Walla Walla's stock to race in the Dominion. Don Walla easily disposed of his nine opponents, and as ho paced the mile and a quarter in 2.ss—time which he could undoubtedly have improved upon—it should not be long before he is found leading a field of novices past the judge. For many years, Cunningham had a mixed stable of gallopers and trotters, and, at one time, when saddle events figured on all the programmes at Alexandra Park, he was recognised a« a leading rider. He won several races on Master Park, one of the fastest saddle horses of his day, and one capable of pacing half a mile in a minute. Mention of Master Park recalls that on one occasion when a trotting meeting was held on the Takapuna Jockey Club's course, beeausc the Epsom course was being constructed into a dirt track, Master Park won a handicap and the dividend for 10/ was 10/. GREAT HOPE DEAD. Great Hope, winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup in 1023, died recently at Orange, New South Wales. He wa# bred by thfr late R. McMillan at Halswell, and after winning the Great Northern Derby Stakes in 1021 he was purchased by a patron of J. Bryce's stable, under whose supervision he won several important races, including the New Zealand Derby Stakes. At that time he raced in the late Mr. J. R. Corrigan's colour's, but later he was sold to the Dunedin sportsman Mr. J. Trengrove, for whom Great Hope won a New Zealand Trotting Cup. He later went to Perth to compete at the championships of. the West Australian Trotting Association. Great Hope was by Great Audubon from Sadie Dillon, aijd left New Zealand with a record of 2.8 to the mile for ten furlongs. He was foaled in 1918.

The largest dividend ever paid to backers on an Auckland racecourse was returned to supporters of Karamu some years ago, when that gelding won a hurdle'race at Avondale. The amount waa over £400. The second largest dividend was paid to back era of Leo Delaval when he won a hack event on the old Takapuna racccourse. The dividend was over. £300.
