MORNING RECEPTION.
NAVY LEAGUE FUNCTION. BEATTY ENTERTAINED. Countess Beatty was the guest of honour at a morning tea in the Lyceum Club yesterday, given by Mrs. C. H. T. Palmer, wife of the president of the Navy League. The lounge of the club was attractively decorated for the occasion with bowls of agapanthus, hydrangeas and zinnias.
"Mrs. Palmer received her guests wearing a frock of navy blue taffeta and a matching coat and navy straw hat. Lady Beatty wore a frock of navy crepe suede with a white organdie collar and an upturned navy hat.
Lady Beatty gave a short talk on Sea Cadet Corps, an institution which she and her husband are anxious to organise in Auckland. "Although New Zealand is a young country," said Lady Beattv, "her people have their own sea traditions and are well known for their love of the sea. In Auckland, with its beautiful harbour and sea-loving people, there is a marvellous opportunity for the foundation of a corps." Lady Beatty described the corps that she and her husband had started near their home at Leicester.
Lady Beatty pointed out the advantage of having a trained body of men ready for an emergency, and the enjoyment that young men would get fro*n their training. She urged the women of Auckland to use their organising power to further this end.
As an example of the ability that women have for organising, Lady Beatty told an amusing anecdote about a "ladies' committee" on one of the South Sea islands which she visited. These women acted as police, stopped the men from fighting, and insisted on the village being kept clean. She looked at the men, who had a fierce appearance, and asked how it was that the women could discipline them, and was told that the women .were much feared, as they were organised, and always kept together. Among those present were: Lady Davis, Mrs. VV. H. Parkes, Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane, Mrs. J. W. Rivett-Carnac, Mrs. 11. R. Bloomfield, Mrs. E. H. B. Milsom, Mrs. H. McCoy, Mrs. J. H.
