TO-DAY IN CHRISTCHURCH. GOVERNMENT STOCKS WANTED. WEAKNESS IX INDUSTRIALS. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.'*) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Government stock was again in demand on the Cliristchurch Exchange this morning. *1 here were firm buyers for nino issues ranging up to £90 "for the 1040 4 per cent bonds and stock, but not one seller appealed. Consolidated Bricks had their first sale since November, and showed a rise of sd. Among the sales reported there were transactions in New Zealand 1-at tilers Co-op., in which tlieie has been little business done lately, the 1940 issue selling at i.',H7 ,3 , and 19.3.3 issue at £87 10 . Auckland Gas contributing wete down 3d to change hands at 12 0. and British Tobaccos dropped steeply to fetch 47 .3. I 7 les.-. than the last saie. Although no business was done there was also a strong demand for insurance c-crip. N.itionnls were wanted at 10, 8. which is fractionally stronger than when they were quoted, buyers of New Zealand* inised their offers fid to .34'. and Standards were wanted at .31. . No sellers came forward.
In the brewery scction buyers of Dominion profs. raised their offers (id to 34 '6. but were still whip of the sellers' limit** at 3G'. New Zealands were firm from 40 0 to 41 '. and Tootli's were quoted from 5.3.'8 to .56/.
Tho fall in industrials was not arrested and there was n further drop in Bt itish Tobaccos. Buyers of Dunlops came down '2d to 20 6. and there was no sign of a firm tendency.
