PROMINENT FAMILY.
IN RUSSIAN BALLET COMPANY. Well represented in the C'ovent Garden Russian Ballet, which opens its Xew Zealand season in Auckland at His Majesty s Theatre on February 1, is the Grigorieff family. Affectionately called the "Russian Bear" because of hit* size, Serge Grigorieff is "Regisseur-General." That is, he is responsible for all rehearsals, and has to remember every step and note of music in every ballet. He carries the choreography and music of more than 50 around in his head. With the managing director he selects casts. Although considered the background of tile ballet, he avoids publicity of any kind. Grigorieff, senior, commenced his career with Diaghileff, and it was the icreat impresario who said of him, "In bullet no one is indispensable— frrisi'i ieff almost." GrigorietF's wife. Litbov Tchei nicheva, was a magnificent dancer of a few years ago. and her daugTi-ter-in-law. Taniara Grigorieva. is carrying on in her tradition*. Mme. Grigorieff instructs Tamara in the rolee which ehe created, in many instances, and on the stage they bear an extraordinary resemblance t« each other.
