Words of wisdom to the powers that b*. ilr. Douglas. Jerrold, for many years editor of the "English Review," who*e opinion is A weighty one, writes, in the epilogue of his autobiography, "Georgian Adventure": "The world unrest has nothing, of course, to do with dictatorships and democracies. The need of the world is for peace and freedom, and neither democracy in its present form nor dictatorship in any of the models so far offered to us will give us either. The basis of liberty ia economic independence, ami the world i* moving rapidly—even more rapidly in the democracies than eU-e where—towards its extinction. All men have the need to ba governed, and our English system fulfils the need better than most of it<s rivals. tJovernj nient, however, is ft means not an end. and | it is imperative if freedom is to preserved to | prevent any further incursions of government on the legitimate tasks of free men, and above all to choose the means to earn their livelihood | and the way in which they shall liv> their i lives, how they shall bring up their children, what they shall eat, what they shall drink, where they shall live and wherewith they shall be clothed." For "English" read "New Zealand-" It will be conceded that these few words are worthy of the careful consideration of the authors of some of our harassing legislation. J.WAV. I was amazed at the want of knowledge of everyday affairs displayed !>y "Consumer," who asks for a li*t of imported foodstuffs that would he missed if their importution were .barred.
