NECKLACE BURNED.
VALUED AT £265. TITLED LADY'S PEARLS. GIRL CHARGED WITH THEFT. Charged with the theft of a pearl necklace, valued at £265, belonging to a titled lady, a young woman appeared in the Police Court before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., this morning. Detective-Sergeant McHugli obtained a remand until Monday. In asking that bail be allowed, Mr. Trevor Henry, appearing for the accused, said she had been in prison since her arrest, but he did not wish her to be returned there. She could remain in the care of the Salvation Army pending the hearing of the charge, if this was satisfactory to the magistrate. "I am instructed that she has a complete answer to this charge," said counsel. "Have the pearls been recovered?" asked the magistrate. "No, sir, they were destroyed—they were burned," answered Detective-Ser-geant McHugli. In granting the remand, Mr. Levien admitted accused to bail in her own recognisance on condition that she stayed with the Salvation Army. On counsel's application the magistrate decided that the name be not published in the meantime.
