MANUREWA COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Manurewa Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Ferguson) being in the chair.

Foreman's Report..— Men engaged in the borough under 13 special scheme total 48. Cutting back of grass banks and shoulders has been carried out where overhanging grass was heavy. The sealing and patching of shoulders on miin South Road is still in progress. Reconstruction of tile drain from Hall Road to Burton's store is in progress. The existing tile drain (2in) is being replaced with 4in. and feeder drains have been lifted and cleaned. All trees and scrub 011 railway bush reserve have been cut back 15ft and trees on the roadside have been cut out. This work has been carried out under the instructions of the Railway Department. Floodlighting of •Tellicoe Park has been completed and lights have been installed in the dressing sheds. Work of clearing gorse on the Cemetery Reserve is still in progress. This v.-ork has been retarded owing to three men being suspended for one week. Grading has been carried out on roads with loose surfaces. Further scarifying hag been carried out on Mahia Road hill as there is very little metal on these r,arts, and have had to supplement same with scoria. Selwyn Avenue has been scarified and graded and about 1.5 yar.ls of scoria is required. Flower pots have been dug over and asters, petunias and ageratum ate being planted out. Sufficient soil is now in hand for more grass plots. The main water meter has been read and a total of 309.000 gallons passed through the meter for December. The half-yearly meter reading has been completed in Manurewa and Takanini. Twelve new connections have been made durinc the month, bringing the total to 390 meters installed to date. Traffic.—The traffic officer (Mr. F. Sainty) reported that he had been on duty during the holidays on the Great South Road. The behaviour on the-road was excellent, only minor accidents bavins? occurred. Visibility on Main Highways.—A letter was received from the Main Highways Board representative stating that the board is prepared to assist financially towards improving visibility at corner* at main highway intersections and invites local authorities to submit proposals accordingly. Left to foreman to report to next meeting. Road Opposite Pegler's.—Tn renly to a request by the council to strengthen the roadway opposite Pegler's Building, the Main Highways Board advised thnt as it was contemplating substantial improvements to a section of the Great South Road, including the portion within the borough, it would not be advisable to incur any great expenditure on the work indicated. Town Hall Piano.—A report was made on the condition of the Town Hall piano and it was decided to carry out the repairs suggested at a cost of £7 10/. Road and Footpath Loan.—ln reply to the council's letter deciding to m<}dify is application in respect of the roads an-j footpaths loan of £21,950, to cover only the cost of concreting footpaths and tarsealing Alfriston Road main highway, the Loans Board advised that its application for this amount (£8590) would be submitted to the first available meeting for consideration. Physic-ail Fitness Week.—Two delegates were appointed to attend a proposed conference of Papakura, Manurewa and Otahuhu boroughs and districts of the Manukau county to arrange a joint programme and set up a district committee. Lights in Town Hall.—lt was reported that certain bodies using the Town Hall were removing the bulbs and installing extra lighting, thus damaging certain parts of the electrical installations. Special permission must now be obtained before any interference with the lighting in the hall can be made.
