SIGNS FOR NEW DRIVERS.
OTAHTXHTX COUNCII/S OPINION. tliat the suggestion of the New Zeaflnd Road Safety Council, as contained In a letter from the Commissioner of Transport, where it was stated that L plate* would be issued to a class of newdrivers after a driver's license had been issued, was not in the interests of road safety, was the opinion expressed by the Otahuhu traffic inspector at the council meeting last evening. The proposal is to give power to local authorities to issue a piate with the letter L to indicate that the driver is not fully competent to drive. The proposed regulation further states that before a license is issued at all the applicant must first pass an adequate test. Having thus received his license, where was the need for tho L plate, asked the inspector. The inspector suggested that the regulation should provide that during the time the new driver was using an L plate he should be accompanied by a fully qualified driver. After discussion the council sup]>orted the inspector's comments on the proposed regulations.
