TWO INJURED.

ATTACK WITH AXE.

INCIDENT IN FAR NORTH.

POLICE MAKE ARREST. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI. :!. ~ day. Two people are in the Hokianga Hospital at Kawene as the result, it is alleged, of being attacked with an axe, at Tabeke, a native settlement 12 miles from Kaikohe. Ti.ey are: Air. Harold Joseph, u half-caste, and Airs. M. Rawiri, wife of Xoka Kawiri, and the lastnamed has been charged with assaulting Joseph.

Concerned in the incident was ilrs. Janie Xelson, whose husband, Ernest Severin Nelson, was murdered on the evening of June 9, 1030. Mr. Xeli-on was found lying in the roadway to heft Rangiahua residence, with a gaping gunshot wound in his side.

Together with Mr. and Mrs. Rawiri, to whom she is related, and Mr. Joseph, Mrs. Xelson attended a lwisket social to raise founds for the Xgupuhi centennial canoe. Leaving the social at. Kaikohe at an early hour on Saturday inorninu: the party arrived at the ltuwiri home, where Mrs. Xcii-on also lives, at about :'>.'M) a.m. Kawiri, who is aged about :!•">. and is a labourer employed by tin- Public Works Department, had picceded the other three home. At Tahekc the two women were taiking in the car with Mr. Joseph, when, it is alleged, an attack was made with a four-and-a-half pound bush axe. Mrs. Rawiri was the most seriously injured, the axe cutting right through the right shoulder. Mr. Joseph seceived a deep gash in the chin and Mrs. Xelnon was not hurt.

Arrested by Constables E. J. Gibbs and J. Frain, of Kawene, Kawiri was brought before Messrs. F. C. Hargreave and T. C. Lane, J.P.'s, on Saturday charged with assaulting Harold Joseph so a-s to cause actual bodily harni.-The aiijdication of the police for a remand to Friday next was granted, bail being refused.
