ECCENTRIC GOLF.
AN ENDURANCE TEST.
600 HOLES \H FOUR DAYS. MUST NOT EXCEED 100. According to a Press Association cable from Los Angeles, the Chicago freak golfer, J. Smith Ferebee, has "broken out in a fresh place.'' He has wagered 100,000 dollars that he can play 600 holes in a four-day transcontinental match! Starting at dawn he played 84 holes, then flew to Phoenix, where he is playing 85 before nightfall of the same day. He is then to continue with 72 holes morning and afternoon at Kansas City and St. Louis (Tuesday I, Milwaukee and Chicago (Wednesday l. Philadelphia and New York (Thursday). He must clo every 18 holes under 100. Eight Rounds in a Day. On Aigust H a Chicago message stated that starting at five minutes past four in the morning. ■). Smith Ferebee, a Chicago broker, completed eigiit rounds of golf in IT, hours /> minutes.
He had made a wager of half a Virginian plantation, worth .£.'57.50, and i'OJv cash that he would succeed.
Ferebee was accompanied by a doctor, a scorer and three caddies, who were changed ever.v 'Mi hole's. He was confident that he would play the 144 holes, but was worried whether he could clo every round under fla, a* he had wagered.
Another broker and Mr. Fercbeo wanted fc> dissolve partneiship in the plantation. but could not agree about terms, so finally derided upon the wager.
The course was sodden, and. playing through thunderstorms. Ferebee was drenched. He finished with blistered heels and lumbago.
"Everything hurt*. - ' he moaned, an lie holed his fiß7t!> stroke on the last green. The scores of Ferebee s eight rounds ill order were: 00. 82. 82. 82. 87, 87. 88, 89. Ferebee's average per round was SO — well under his limit of O.i.
