OPEN SPRINT.

THE FLYING HANDICAP.

LARGE FIELD ENTERED.

CANDIDATES' PERFORMANCES.

The Flying Handicap at Avondale next Saturday week has drawn a fine field of splinters and the race should be a good one. Jonathan (9.0) had a race at the Pakuranga meeting, but he failed to show up. This was his first outing since the autumn, and though he is getting on in J T ea ™ he is no* a spent light yet. Silver Jubilee (8.12) is another good sprinter, who only had one outing last season, and that was over hurdles at Napier Park in June. He has gome good races to his credit, j including victories at Randwick and Roßenill, but he has been off the scene for quite a Jong time, with the exception of his race at Greenmeadows. However, he is reported to be doing all right and is to race at Wanganui this week. Te Hero (8.10) was one of the most brilliant two-year-olds in the Dominion last season, and he would only need to repeat that form to be troublesome. He has previously won at Avondale. Majority, Orate, Royal Bachelor and Prince Acre have 8.8. The firstnamed was successful on half a dozen occasions last season, four of which were hack sprint events. However, he scored in open sprints at Wairarapa and Eginont. Orate stayed out seven furlongs very solidly at the Waipa meeting at Te Rapa to beat Gay Seton. Maori Song, Prince Acre and others. He had 81b above the minimum on that occasion and now has 221b. Royal Bachelor is a good sprinter,

and if reserved for this race instead of the Cup he will have plenty of support. Prince Acre won the Members' Handicap, six furlongs, at the Great Northern meeting and has been in the. money on several occasions since then, including two seconds at the last Wellington meeting and two at Taranaki last weeK!:4r3sis quartet baa prospects, but Royal Bacheloejappeak most " Maori Song (»i) ran. an excellent race in the Admiralty Handicap, six furlongs, at* the Pakuranga ;teeeting, jwben be waa •just beaten by a bead by. Touhg Paddon after losing ground, at the atart*, .He bad 8.7 on that ib» mhnmum J>eing 8.0, and was giving; Young Paddon 21b. Now; he baa only to give him lib.. Maori Song appeal*. Young Paddon andErndale have each been awarded 8.2, and the former is preferred after his recent good form. Arvakur (8.0) was a good two-year-old last season, and will have to be considered, while Trilliarch (7.13) was third to Gay Seton and Notium in the Visitors' Handicap, six furlongs, at the Great Northern meeting, and occupied a similar position to Young Paddon and.Maori Song in the Admiralty Handicap, of'similar distance, at the Pakuranga meeting. These w«re his last two outings, and as he baa been going well in his track work he should show up. Hot Box, Rulette and Marie's Acre have 7.13. Hot Box perfarmed prominently in'two-year-old events Isst season, and, like Arvakur, will have to be considered. Rulette is very speedy, but 1 has not raced aince running eecdnd' to Day Wind over a mile at Te Rape last May. Marie's Acre has not had • race for months, but has been working well. Palnstre, Triune and Du Maurier bars 7.7, and the first-named seems the most likely,' after her good performances last; Season, especially if,the track is firm. Besiege (7.2) and Philcourt (7.0) seem the be»t:\ef>-fbte remainder,; particularly, the lift*** looks improved as the result of'bis ' '.twili§: J tm -the Pakuranga meeting. Some . who may be in demand just now an: Royal Bachelor,. Maori Song, Te Hero, Trilliarch, Young"., Paddon, Philcourt, Prince Aero. ■ , '■'- ■ •u,
