EXHIBITION OF ART.
u UNPAINTED PICTURES."
ADDRESS BY CURATOR
"Unpainted Pictures" was the subject dealt with by the curator of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Mr. Gilbert Archey, at the exhibition of paintings by New Zealand artists in the Unity Hall last night.
"To appreciate the work of an artist, we must go through the mental processes which led to the creation of the picture in the mind of the artist before he put his brush to eanvas," he said.
To understand the artistry with which that was conveyed, it was necessary to follow the artist in his first perception of the subject, declared Mr. Archey. "Pictures are not mere representations of objects in nature," he said, "but are creations in which something of the artist himself is added to the subject depicted. This recreating of the 'unpainted picture' is an elementary form of art in which everyone can indulge," he concluded.
The exhibition, which is being held under the auspices of the Auckland Society of Arts, will conclude to-morrow.
