MYSTERY ARRESTS.
Raids in Vienna and Berlin On Alleged Smugglers.
317 OF 339 HELD ARE JEWS,
LONDON, June 1. There is a mystery concerning a large number of arrests in Berlin and Vienna, allegedly of persons engaged in smuggling opium and foreign currency, but it is significant that out of 339 persons arrested in Berlin 317 are Jews.
Police raided two restaurants yesterday and arrested 70 who, they state, were criminals, others who were political suspects, and still others who were alleged to be foreigners with defective passports.
The number of arrests in Vienna in the past few days is believed to total 2000, and to include both Jews and Aryans in many spheres. Most of them are accused of breaches of the currency lays, but others are alleged to be Communists and are accused of conspiring against the State.
It is reported that over 100 Jewish doctors who were recently arrested are mainly charged with performing illegal operations.
