REVENUE BUOYANT.
BUT COSTS INCREASE.
DEVONPORT FINANCES. A recommendation that the rebate on rates allowed by the Devonport Borough Council be reduced from a maximum of ii per cent to 2£ per cent, thus increasing the revenue by approximately £000, was made by-the town ;clerk, Mr. A. E. Wilson, in his report on the annual estimates to the council last evening. Speaking of the 'iprohletas of formulating accurate estimates, he pointed out that although revenue last year was more buoyant than anticipated, material and labour coats increased on all sides.
While fliial figures were not available from the Government Valuation Department for the purposes "f the'estimates, capital value in the torough M'as put down at £2,070,000, and the unimproved value at £760,000. The estimated revenue of £.33,000 contained the following items: General account, £21,-120; water supply account, £9000; hospital rate account, £3800; refuse rate account, £1350; lighting rate account, £1780; arid interest rate account, £13,250. It was pointed out that except for the passing on of an increase of £988 in the hospital levy, rates in the borough would be the same as last year. The estimates were approved.
