TRADE REPORT FOR 1937.
BIG INCREASE IN IMPORTS.

SUVA, May 25,
The trade and navigation report issued by the Kingdom of Tonga for the year 1937 shows the tptal value of imports for the year at £137,365 0/10, against £92,296 8/6 in 1936.
Imports from the United Kingdom and British possessions were £101,687 in 1937 and £70,385 the previous year. Imports from foreign countries were £35.678 last year and £21.911 in 1936.
Exports were valued at £164,620 13/3, against £116,538 18/9 in 1936.
The principal exports were copra. 12,287 tons, valued at £155,133 (11.899 tons and £105,078); and bananas, valued at £4128, against £7373 in 1930.
Inward shipping comprised 30 vessels of # total tonnage of 60,501. Of these 20 were British and four Swedish. In 1936 shipping comprised 31 vessels, totalling 41,170 tons. Of these 17 were British and six Swedish.
It is interesting to note that the value of imports from Japan has increased from £4187 in 1934 to £20,009 in 1937. The principal increase is in drapery, which lias, risen from £3013 in 1934 to £16,535 in 1937.
