97TH BIRTHDAY.
OLDEST NORTHCOTE RESIDENT A family gathering, in celebration of the 97th birthday of Mr. James Hurley, who has lived at Northcote 57 years, was held last evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. W. Millar, Vincent Street, Northcote. The visitors included the Mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. E. J. Osborne, the deputy-Mayor, Mr. Albert Hadfield, and Mrs. Hadfield. Mr. Hurley was born at Watchet, Somerset, England, on November 9, 1840, and in 1871 was married to Miss Elizabeth Gould. Taking passage by the clipper Northumberland, the family came to Auckland in 1880. • On arrival they were rowed direct from the ship to the sulphur works on the eastern beach at Northcote. Mrs. Hurley died in 1927 at the age of 83 years. There are four sons, Messrs. Alfred, Walter, Albert and Thomas Hurley, and three daughters, Mesdames Edward Stilwell and A. W. Millar, and Miss Bessie Hurley. All live at Northcote. There are 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
