TWO MINUTES' SILENCE.
NOVEMBER 11, 193 7. In this tranced moment snatched from Time, Immaculate—untouched —sublime; Let us in spirit for a little S]>ace Withdraw into sonic holy place Of silence and be still: O Silence that is more profound Than speech, more eloquent than sound— And yet whose very breathlessness is shrill With ghostly voices; love and grief, And pain and passion past belief, And woe for wasted youth, and pride Of sacrifice so sanctified. Let us be mute; Ikjw low the head; This is the Roll Call of the Dead: From fields forsaken and from far-off eeas Must the gallant companies; Rank after rank the lost battalions come To soundless bugle and a phantom drum. Though hushed in homage now the world is stilled (Nor sound, nor breath, nor sob nor sighing), Witli myriad voices is the silence filled, The living to the dea<l men crying. Clearly as tolls a passing bell, () Salutation! —and the Dead replying: Forgiveness and farewell! —ISABEL M. CLUETT.
