HIS MAJESTY'S OPPOSITION.
The proposal to pay the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons a salary of £2000 a year may recall the orijrin of the title, "His Majesty's Opposition.!' It was first used by Lord Brougham, and George Canning accepted it as an appropriate appellation. George Tierney, a distinguished member of the Whig party—then in Oppositionsaid: "We are certainly a branch of Hia Majesty's Government, for, although the gentlemen opposite are in office, we are in power; the measures are ours, but all the emoluments are theirs."
