PROTECTION SOCIETY.

THE MONTH'S ACTIVITIES. The question of excessive drinking *t dance-halls, cabarets, and seaside resorts was discussed by the executive of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children at the monthly meeting held in the society's room on Monday afternoon. The opinion was expressed that these conditions constituted a grave source of danger to young people, authentic statements from social workers showing that girls as young as l.~> years had been seen quite drunk and irresponsible for their actions. A special committee was set up to make inquiries and take suitable action. StrMt Trading By Children. The society had recently taken up the question of employment of children in street trading, etc. A letter had been received from the Hon. P. Fraser thanking the society for its action in the nmtter, and stating that an investigation m m being conducted by the Bureau of Social Science Research into the question of the employment of children in the cities, especially in connection with milk rounds, paper rounds and theatre trading, and that legal provision could probably be made to control same. Lapsed Insurance Policies. It lias been stated to the society that considerable hardship resulted from the number of industrial policies which had lapsed owing to the inability of the policy holders to keep up payments of tlieir premium#. It was decided that the matter be brought before the Government with ft requr-st for legislation to provide protection in thene cases. The final report was received showing the result of the street collection held i -'fitly with the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary.
