STEEL FAMINE.

\ SCRAP IRON "WANTED.

APPEAL IN BRITAIN. An appeal has been made to motor car manufacturers and traders in Great Britain, by the British Iron and Steel Federation, to do everything possible to increase the flow of scrap iron to the steel plants, because of the great demands of the armament manufacturers for more and more steel for Britain's rearmament programme. The idea is to accelerate the junking of old, obsolete cars and trucks, so that the scrap metals obtained from them can be turned over to the armament industry. Last year 4,000,000 tons of scrap were used in Great Britain, of which one-quarter had to be imported. One suggestion is that a campaign be started in Great Britain, having as its object the collection of all useless cars and parts which are lying in garages and engineering workshops. If the campaign is successful, many thousands of obsolete and dangerous vehicles will be removed from the roads, while, due to prevailing scrap metal prices, their owners may gain more for their vehicles than by selling them for further use.
