ABANDON ANTI-JAPANISM.

PEKING, September 26.

A Japanese spokesman yesterday said that though it was early to talk of the possibility of peace, Japan would welcome a change of atmosphere which would make possible a halt in hostilities. Everything depended upon the Chinese abandoning anti-Japanism. China should reflect that her best troops had been defeated at Paoting and Tsangchow and that their position in North China was seriously weakened. A Chinese spokesman declares that the Japanese reference to a change of atmosphere is not important. It only means that the Japanese require the Chinese to surrender, which is impossible.
