THE CLUB SEASON.
PONSONBY CHAMPIONS.
By winning their match with University as u preliminary to the Test match, l'onsonby, winners of tin- senior chnnipionf'hlp, earned the title of champion of champions for the l'J37 reason. There was no shadow of doubt as to their superiority for they ran out winners to the tune of y7 points to 12 in a fast, open and interesting encounter. At the interval Ponsonby led by 8 points to 3, but following the change-over they rattled on points in good si.vie to make the score at one stage I>7 points to 3 in their favour. University came witli a late rattle to rellure the winning margain, but they were beaten by a better team on the day. Much of Poiisonby's success can be attributed to I>ave Solomon, their brilliant fiveeighths. He was continually in the picture for thrustful movements, ' and was the principal brains of the attack. He scored several trie-' and in addition aililiil points to his side's tally witli his reliable l>oot. His brother. F. Solomon, was also in form, and he and Knight were the outstanding forwards on the ground. The pair were always backing up, and their work, generally, speaking, was of a high order. For the losers forwards who were prominent were Drake, Armitage, Lange and Foreman. Among the backs, .Mulvihill and Carnachan were enterprising, while Bush gave a sound display at full-back.
CANTERBURY'S LAST GAME.
(By Telegrnph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. Canterbury won its last representative Rugby match of the season, beating South Canterbury by 30 points to 22 on a heavy ground yesterday. Although, rain fell heavily at times, there were many bright incidents and there was some good back play as well as solid rucking among the forwards. The splendid kicking of J. J. McAuliffe, the Canterbury captain, was a big feature in the home side's win. Eight times McAuliffe placed the heavy, greasy ball and seven times it went between the posts. Four were penalty goals, and three were conversions of tries. Canterbury scored four tries and South Canterbury five.
Canterbury managed to gain a 20 points to 3 lead, playing with the wind in the first spell, and two converted tries early in the second spell made South Canterbury's chance almost hopeless. The visitors, however, struck to their task with great determination, and in the last 20 minutes were attacking continually. There was a small attendance at the match, which commenced at 12.30 p.m., and a strong, cold wind made conditions unpleasant.
Scorers for Canterbury were Busefield. Herman. Nolan and Hattersley. McAuliffe kicked four penalty goals and converted three tries. For South Canterbury Ryan (2), Romson, Vucetirh and Adkins scored tries. Strang converted one try and Stewart kicked a penalty goal.
