TREES TO GO?
NORTHCOTE POINT PINES. REPLACEMENT SUGGESTED. A suggestion that the clump of pinus insignis trees on Northcote Point should be felled!and replaced with pohutukawas was, last night, referred by the Northcote Borough Council to the parks committee for consideration.
■' Mr. H. A. Adams wrote requesting that ■ consideration be given the matter of clearing off all the pines on the Point Reserve, and replanting with poliutukawas, leaving some open grassed' Bpaces and an outer fringe to give a harbour view. "One has. only to look at the similar effect, obtained at Birkenhead," he stated.' "Many people have commented on the bleak, depressing" appearance of the old pine clump on the Northcote Point Reserve, in sharp'contrast with the Birkenhead wharf reserve and jthe trimness of the Devonport reserve. No doubt many vill cling to sentiment about the clump, regardless of the fact that it is unsightly and well past its prime, but I prefer to take the forward! and if the council is prepared to clean off the whole of the pines within the next two years, with the intention of replanting with pohuti}kawas, I will gladly contribute £10 towards the good job."
Mr. C. A. Clark (chairman the parks* committee): We will be "shot at daWn'Jf we i cut down those trees,:
