ACROSS THE HARBOUR.
. It is -suggested by the Auckland Harbour Board's engineer that before anything can be done to increase the facilities for carrying vehicles across the harbour a guarantee should be given that neither bridge nor tunnel would be started for twenty years. This is too much to ask, but the suggestion opens up a road for concerted action by all interested on both sides of the harbour and by the Board itself. At present the facilities are inadequate. Mr. Holderness says that that is the case only at infrequent intervals. That depends upon the point of view. Congestion occurs fairly frequently now, but with the steady growth of traffic it must become more acuie. Hundreds of thousands are being spent on the roads of the North, and much of the traffic that they will carry will necessarily be impeded if the ferries cannot handle the traffic promptly. The suggested diversion of the western section of the traffic to Little Shoal Bay has much to commend it at first view. Next summer will see much vexatious delay even if the fullest possible use be made of the existing- facilities, and in order that the delays may be minimised in future a conference of all interested bodies should be called, to consider this question, which can be divorced entirely either from bridge or tunnel, with a view to a rapid improvement of the terminal facilities.
