TO-DAY IN CHRISTCHURCH.
AUSTRALIAN BANKS ADVANCE. COMMERCIALS LEAD THE WAY. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. There was again a strong tone ou Exchange this morning and moderately active markets. Banks and Government securities were well held, and buyers offered solid rates without much response. Commercial Bank of Australia led the way pn a rising t market to 18/0, closing Quotations Id either side, while preferences, whieh had last local business ut £9 "2/, had buyers at £9 7.6, sellers 2/6 higher. All Australian banks seemed better. In insurances Nationals had reported sales at 18/3, which is a rise of 1/ since a fortnight ago. Buyers offered 17/10, sellers 18. 6. Strong support was given to South British at 14 16/, and no seller. Breweries again had no sales, with a market for New Zealands barely holding late rates. New Zealand miscellaneous industrial shares failed to come on the sales list, but a number of quotations were very firm. New Zealand Newspapers were wanted at £1 16/, nearest seller £2. The Australian group showed a few price variations. Coles lost 3d from yesterday's peak level, Hume Pipes were Id easier, and Dunlops dropped a point to £ I 2/5. On the other hand, both ordinary and preference shares of Electrolytic Zincs were stronger, the ordinaries rising 6d. to £2 16/9, and the preferences 4d, to £2 17/10. Taranaki Oilfields had business 2d higher, at 3/, after which sellers were unsupported at 5/1. Mining improved a little, Barrytowns following yesterday's sales with a market from £1 5/7 to £1 10/.
