ACCOUNTANTS' SOCIETY.

MEETING IN WELLINGTON.

Matters of importance to the profession were discussed at a recent meeting of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, held in Wellington. Mr. J. Mawson Stewart (Canterbury) presided. The Auckland representatives were Messrs. J. M. Elliffe, E. D. Wilkinson and D. H. Steen, the South Auckland representative being Mr. It. English. It was decided to adhere strictly to the society's regulations in connection with examinations. The secretary was authorised to inform applicants for concessions which would involve a breach of regulations that their requests could not be granted.

The council adopted a recommendation of the education committee in regard to extensions of the society's libraries (a. total of eighteen) in all districts, and keeping them up to date by yearly purchases of new standard works. It was mentioned that a sum of about £500 would be spent on the purchase of new books this year. A proposal for the inauguration of open thesis competitions was adopted, and the Auckland councillors were appointed a committee to draw up a scheme for submission to the education committee. Mr. Steen stated that he and Mr. A. M. Seaman (Auckland) were preparing a report on suggested alterations to the Bachelor of Commerce degree or, alternatively, an outline of subjects for a straight-out Accountancy degree. It was reported that a satisfactory understanding had been reached with the New Zealand Law Society on amendments to regulations for the auditing of solicitors' trust accounts. Final consideration was given to various points which would be embodied in a statement of the society's case for certain amendments of the Land and Income Tax Act. In reply to the society's request for the granting of a partial pass in the matriculation examinations, the Registrar of the University wrote that the matter was under consideration by the Coui. il of i ioni»l Research.
