RESTRICTION OF IMPORTS.
The exportation of scrap metal to Japan has become so well established a feature of New Zealand's external trade that a sudden reduction in demand has serious repercussions. The "position is now that special permits have to be obtained from the Japanese Government before further shipments may be sold in that country owing to the uncertainty of finances. The Finance Department- of the Japanese Government is giving out letter* of credit for the purchase of scrap steel, and those importers who meeive them can obtain no more.
