OVERSEAS TOURISTS ARRIVE HERE THIS MORNING

Mariposa Brings Prominent People.

There were many interesting people on the Mariposa this morning, from Sydney on their way to America. Some were doing world tours, others returning home after holidays spent in Australia and the South Sea«. Mrs. H. X. Baylis, a charming American woman, was returning home to Detroit, Michigan, alter a trip round England, the Continent and five months' stay in Australia. Accompanied by her husband and two children, Mrs. Baylis had a wonderful time in Sydney, which she says is very Ami 1 , leanised. From Adelaide, South Australia, came Mrs. A. S. Bichards, just starting out on her first journey round the world. She left a grown-up family behind, confessing that she was "just domesticated," looking after her children and playing golf. Stage Designing. Travelling her husband, Jimmy Gerald, was Essie Jennings, well known to Xew Zealand. She is no longer on the stage, but does costuming for her husband's shows. "It is hara to say bow one gets ideas," she said. "They all come out of the rhythm of the dances. One sees a new show and the right costumes seem to come naturally to fit in with the rhythm." Miss Jennings had recently met Madge Elliot in London, where she is making a sensational hit as a pantomime boy. Cyril Ritchard is working with Gracie Fields in a new picture and Bathie Stewart continues to live in Hollywood in very happy circumstances. . Travelling with the Geralds are Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan, of Sydney, prominent in film laboratories. They are going on a motoring tour of Mexico. Mrs. Vaughan is looking forward to meeting in Hollywood executives of the motion picture industry and their wives. The Brisbane girls, Mary and Joan Maguire, will be entertaining her. Mrs. J. Linden, of . Wellington, returned from a holiday spent with her parents in Sydney. She has been residing for 15 months in Xew Zealand

and likes this country immensely although it is so different from Australia. Other well-known people passing through Auckland to-day are Mre. F. K. McMaster and Miss Judith McMaster, of Sydney; Mrs. C.'K. Winston and her two children; Mre. J. M. Connell, of London, returning home after the rush of the Coronation has died down a bit; Mrs. C. P. Sellards and her two children, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hodgson, of England, who are on a world tour.
