SENSE OF HUMOUR.

WOMEN HAVE IT?

LAUGHTER AT MEETING.

From time to time it has been stated officially and otherwise that women have not their fair share of a sense of humour. Perhaps the majority of women do not hold their sides with laughter when a poor unfortunate slips on a banana skin, but women, may one say, can to a great extent see the joke against themselves. A case in point took place at a recent women's meeting in Auckland when a large percentage of the personnel of the gathering were unmarried women. Miss so-and-so presided, Miss — wielded the secretarial pencil and other single women had been holding the floor in the discussion of important business. After

a discussion of a certain problem, a member (iuarried this time) made a stirring, appeal to the meeting. "We are all women/' she said, "and we're all mothers . . . ." A burst of laughter stopped her but she carried on with, "Well, most of us are married, anyway." This caused more laughter, and the meeting had to be restored- to order by the chairwoman.

The reason why'there are morev«ingle women in women's organisations, especially of a civic and political nature, is, it is needless to say, because their married sisters are busy in the home. Thus, the unmarried women, without the same domestic responsibilities, contribute their share to the progress of the community by endeavouring to make social life a more congenial one for women and children in general.
