"MAN NAMED BILL"
SHOPOI OR»S STORY.
MAGISTRATE'S QUESTION,
WOMAJT SENT TO PRISON.
Stating that a coat valued at £3 19/6 had been placed in her arms by a man named "Bill" who had then run away, Adeline O'Meara (Mr. Aekins), aged 41, denied stealing the garment, which was the property of John Patrick O'Malley. When Mr. McKean, S.M., asked the accused if "Bill," whose full name or address she did not know, was a fair man, clean shaven, and wearing a blue suit, the accused said "Yes." "I thought he would be," said Mr. McKean.
John Patrick O'Malley said on Eriday evening he was walking up France Street, and when near the corner of Karangahape Road he saw the. accused wearing one coat and carrying another over her arm. He thought the coat she was carrying was one that had been hanging outside his shop door, and on questioning her she said it was her own coat, first stating that it had been given her by her husband, and later saying a man named "Bill," who had been introduced to her by her husband, had given it to her. Witness called a constable and accused was arrested.
She admitted later the man she was living, with at Titirangi was not her husband. . The magistrate, after noting that accused had been convicted of shoplifting in 1932, sentenced her to ten days' imprisonment, remarking that there seemed to be a recurrence of this class of offence.
