OFFENDERS SENTENCED. FALSE PRETENCES AND THEFT. A man with a record in England, France and Xew Zealand came before the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, thw morning in the Supreme Court on two charge* of false pretences, which he had admitted. The accused, Thomas Morrison Orove, was"" not represented by counsel and had nothing to say. The charges were the theft of stamps valued at £48 from a collector, Grove having represented that he could eell them, and obtaining £10 from the Farmers' Trading Company, Ltd.. by falselytrepresentin? that he had £50 to come to him from the Pensions Department. Hie Honor told the prisoner that hie record in New Zealand and abroad was a bad one and sentenced him to 18 'mouths* reformative detention. Sentence of four months' hard labour wae imposed on Charles Edward Hansen, who was. committed from Kaikohe on a charge of breaking, entering and theft. Aβ. far back as 1905, said his Honor, prisoner had been convicted of theft and burglary and had been sentenced to two yeare. Tn 1912 for breaking and entering he had been sentenced to two years' reformative detention, in 1910 lie had'been-fined £5 for attempted theft, in 1°23 he had been sentenced to six month* for theft, and in 15*25. on a breaking and entering charge, he had been dpflared an habitual criminal. "In 1028 nrisoner was released, and apparently he has been working and keening out of the courts since thon." said his Honor. "Apparently he has conducted himself in a proper manner during the past few years. I certainly shall not declare him aorain. His old record w bad. but his conduct in the past few years is such that he does not deserve to be declared again."
