OBITUARY.
MR. W. G. BUTCHER. The first settler in the area between Rotorua and Taupo. Mr. William George Butcher, has died at Maketu. In lS9t> his father. Mr. H. R. Butcher, of Christ - church, bought the Strathmore estate of 4N.000 acres and placed his son in charge. After extensive improvements had been undertaken large numbers of sheep, cattle and horses were carried on the property. Mr. Wilfred Stead bought about half the estate in 1912. and afterwards sold it to the Government. This part is now known as the Reporoa Soldiers' Settlement. After the sale of the balance of the estate to Waikato buyers some 18 months ago Mr. Butcher retired to his home at Maketu. MR. A. MORRISON. A pioneer of the northern portion of the Manukau district. Mr. Alexander Morrison, has died at Orua Bay, Manukau Heads, at the age of 70 year?. He was a member of tile Auliitu Koad Board before it was merged with the Franklin County Council. Later lie wa« chairman of the Awliitu Ratepayers' Association. Hr took up land at Orua 40 years ago. Mr. Morrison is survived by his wife, a son and four daughters. MR. W. J. JUPP. (r.y Telegraph.—Press Association.) W KLLINGTOX. Tuesday. An old and well-known Wellington I resident. Mr. William James .Jupp. of Willis Street, died this afternoon, at the age of To. lli< death removes the head of a family closely identified with Wellington for three generations. lie was a leading figure in the bra>.» band movement.
