GAY THRONGS.

HOLIDAY OUTINGS.

BEACHES AMD RACES APPEAL MANY ATTRACTIONS. With the sultry heat of summer still about, Boxing Day opened auspiciously, and with fears of bad weather set at rest, Auckland opened its heart to the gladness of active holiday makinr. Yesterday, in fact and spirit, was a day of rest for most people—to-day they "went places." As usual the races in the beautiful setting of Ellerslie was one of the major attractions and thousands flocked to the course, but on all roads out of the city, 011 the beaches on the harbour, the city park* and all places that offered relaxation there were hordes of holiday-makers. Many Auckland residents had travelled further afield for the holiday, but thousands of visitors' to the city from other parts more than compensated, for their departure. Still, marvellously after the chill penury of past years, there was money to spend, and in the varied attractions that the city offered there was a wide field for its investment in pleasure. Among the special attractions was the Auckland Racing Club's meeting at Ellerslie, and the colourful gardens there and the carnival setting generally, offered a joyous sight. Thousands flocked there in the early morning and the gay frockin;r of the women gave an even brighter aspect to the scene. Week's Offering. A'?ain, there were those who found their entertainment in the provincial cricket tournament that will be played out at Eden Park during the coming week. The golf courses, the bowline greens, and the tennis courts all had their devotees, but by far the greatest attraction among the active sports was offered by the beaches. From early morning the harbour ferries were crowded with picnic parties bound for 011 c of the many beaches of the northern side, and along the city waterfront there were many others in the cool of the water. Throughout the week excursions by rail and sea will offer a varied appeal, and racing at Ellerslie on December 20, and January 1 and 2, with trotting, under the aegis of the Auckland Trotting Club, at Alexandra Park 011 Monday, Wednesday and Thursday as another attraction" to lovers of horses and the sport that goes with them. Sports meetings, regattas and other out-of-town attractions will also have their days of sway.; The evenings will also be catered for. To-niglit there is a boxing match at the Town Hall, and there is a circus at the old dock site, dancing and the amusement offered by city theatres all with their special attractions. On Monday the J. C. Williamson Gilbert and Sullivan Company will open a season at His Majesty's Theatre. For most people there is joy to be had this week, with catering for all tastes; and the indications are that it will be the gayest Christmas and New Year season experienced in the city since 1028.
