INJURED MAORI. POKENO SHOOTING AFFAIR. REMANDED IN CUSTODY. "This is the Maori who was wounded in conflict with the police at the time of his arrest at Pokeno. He has just been discharged from hospital this morning," said Detective-Sergeant J. Wal.sli, in the Police Court this morning, wlien George Frederick appeared, charged with being a rogue and vagabond, found in possession of housebreaking implements at Pokeno on December 5, and also. 011 the same date with breaking and entering the shop of the Farmers' Trading Company at Pokeno with intent to commit a crime. A remand until January 14 was asked for. Mr. J. J. Sullivan, appearing for Murphy, who had to be assisted into the dock by two policemen, said the Maori was still crippled as the result of being shot in the abdomen and had already been punished very severely. "He assures me that he has a complete answer to the charge," said.counsel, who asked for bail. Detective-Sergeant Walsh asked that •bail, if granted, should be substantial. In granting the remand, Mr. Wvvern Wilson refused to allow bail.
