SUCCESS OF NORMANDY.
EX-NEW ZEALAND COLT. Normandy, who won the first division ol' the Maiden Nursery Handicap at Warwick Farm on December 0, scored after the manner of a good colt. He looks the part, too, being a handsome brown of solid proportions and his pedigree leaves nothing to be desired (says an Australian writer). Mr. JO. ,1. Watt gave IxXJgs for Normandy at the last sales. J\o doubt Mr. Watt was iniluenced by the breeding of Normandy, whose lines are much the same as those of Gold Kod, inasmuch as his sire, Gascoiiy, is a grandson of Hoi Ilerode and his dam, Auratum, is a daughter of Desert Gold. In his early career in the Dominion, Normandy showed promise, and on arrival in Sydney last June seemed a likely •Breeders' Plate candidate. He developed a severe cold in August, and all idea of early racing for him way then abandoned. His recovery was complete by October, and lately his work had been satisfactory enough to warrant his being entered for racing this month. Red Rivoli, from No. 3 position, was quickly in the It ad, but Normandy, from No. 4. went with him. Normandy, on the outside, gained the mastery at the straight entrance, but Red Rivoli responded so well to R. Maxwell's call that his backers regained confidence. M. McCiirten kept hard at Normandy with hands and heels, and the colt finished on gamely to beat the favourite by half a neck.
