LOCAL BODIES.
AMALGAMATION SCHEMES
PAPAKURA VIEWPOINT
A lengthy letter was received from the Internal Affairs Department at a meeting of the Papakura Town Board last evening dealing with the proposed Act of Parliament in connection with local body amalgamation schemes. One clause of the Act gives county councils power to review, after a conference with representatives of the local authorities concerned, the circumstances of any such district, and consider whether it is desirable that such districts should be merged and the functions of the local authority thereof transferred to the county council.
"The Papakura Town Board area is within the boundaries of the Manukau County Council,' 'said Mr. H. E. McEntee, chairman of the board. "I do not think the Act applies to us, but is designed against a number of South Island bodies who are boroughs only in name. Already this bo«rd has met the Manurewa Town Board and discussed matters ot mutual interest."
The members agreed that it would be impossible for such places as Papakura, Manurewa and Papatoetoe to amalgamate, but there were some public utili ties, such as water, in which they could work together. The question was deferred for further discussion in the > oming year.
