CONCILIATION PROCEEDINGS.

The industrial dispute •: between the North Island Bricks, Clay Products and Concrete Pipe Manufacturers' Union of Employers, and Wellington, Taranaki and Auckland unions of employees, was discussed this morning in Conciliation Council. " . The employers' assessors were Messrs. T. E. Clark, H. Luke, F. Harris, R. J. Murphy and A. W. Nisbet. Those for the unions were Messrs. L. Glover, S. Belcher, C. Brunt, A. Marton and J. Purtell.

Tlio union sought a 40-hour five-day week. The minimum rates of wages desired a-ere Hangers, strikers, moulders, burners, finishing burners, and electric navvy drivers, 3/ an hour; pipe settlers and draggers, pipe machine men, brick settlers and drawers of patent kilns, shot firers, off-bearers, clay pit men, dolly men, quarry men, fettlers, and crusher ■ feeders, 2/9; plugmakers, pess, brick machine feeders, drive cutters' using tunnel cuts, and all other workers, 2/G. The leading hand should receive 1/6 a day extra. Youths' wages were to be: 16 to 17 vears of asre. £1 15/; 17 to 18, £2; 18 ito 19, £2 5/; 19 to 20, £3; thereafter the minimum wage. The ratio should not exceed one youth to .every four adult workers. Overtime was sought on the basis of time and a half for the first two hours, and double time thereafter, with double time rates for work on Sundays and holidays. A fortnight's annua leave was asked.

. The employers' counter claims provided for Saturday morning work_ for certain employees, and shifts, if required, for burners. A 44-hour week was also desired for burners. The minimum rates proposed were: Flankers and moulders, 2/7 1-5 an hour; strikers, 2/0; settlers and drawers, 2/3 3-5; burners, 2/3; a other workers, 2/2 2-5. Those for youths were: 10 to 17, £1 10/; 17 tol > £1 15/; 18 to 10, £2; 19 to 20, £2 I*>/• Overtime should be computed on basis of time and a half for the nr= four hours, and double time thereafter.
