CRICKET TRIAL.
CHOOSING THE REPS
GAME AT EDEN PARK TO'DAY.
SPIN BOWLER'S DEBUT.
A fine, fast wicket was provided at. Eden Park to-day for the trial match to assist tlio three selectors, Messrs. N. Sneddon, A. Postles and H. Duncan in finally selecting the representative team to make the southern trip at Christmas. The team will play two matches in the Plunket Shield series, the first against Christchurcli, commencing 011 Christmas Day, and the second at Dunedin against Qtago, commencing on December 31. Both matches are fourday fixtures.
Tlio A team, which it is thought comprised eleven of the twelve players who will make the southern tour, fielded this morning, and the B team opened its batting with Mills and Walters. _ The opening pair were dismissed quickly. Mills being well caught at fine slip by T. Dunning, the North Auckland player (after a previous miss), off Cowie. The latter, a probable fast bowler for the New Zealand team to go to England next year, has not had the best of luck in big cricket, the slip lielding, so essential to a fast trundler, not having supported him. Dunning's catch this morning was a good one. Walteis went after contributing 18, bowled !;y Spring, a medium-paced trundler. Tlio North Shore pair Sale and Emery were then partnered, and Spring was unlucky when he was no-balled for one that got Emery's oil stump. Spring was swinging a bit from the leg. and had three fieldsmen close in on that side, and Vivian close in at mid-ofl.
With .">0 on the board the first change in the attack was made, McMalion, the rather diminutive Eden B break bowler being given the ball. In his first ovei McMalion turned one from leg that did not miss Emery's stumps by much. Sale picked a ball from Cowie off his legs nicely, to reach 5, but then fell for one 011 the off, putting it up to Matlieson, second slip, who held a high one-handed catch well. 61—3—5.' Ellis Goes Cheaply. It was expected that Ellis, who has a fine batting record in club cricket this season, would liven the game up when he came next, for in all his innings 110 has been aggressive. Cowie got a third wicket when Emery deflected one just off the off pin 011 to his stumps. McMalion then came down to the Dominion Road end in place of Cowie, and got a wicket immediately, Ellis swinging a full-tosser to the square leg boundary and Hook holding it. 71 —5—4.
Postles, who had survived an Ibw appeal from Cowie, appeared to have had a let off when Matlieson hit his pads with one that kept low and appealed in vain. McMalion had been over-pitching and too wide of the wicket since changing over, but he got another wicket when Marshall swung across a full-tosser and played it on to his wicket. DO —(i—10. Full-tossers Punished. Simpson, who has had such success as a fast bowler on his own wicket at North Shore, had a hit at MeMahon, swinging one to the fence, driving another for six. and pulling the last of tlio over to the boundary.
Vivian re-arranged his field in an endeavour to get Simpson caught off McMalion. A full tosser again was easy for Simpson to olf drive to the pickets, but the young trundler then sent down two better length ones. The first Simpson lifted dangerously to mid-oil', but there was nobody there. To get on to the next the batsman went down the pitch, missedj and was an easy victim for the 'keeper, Carroll. MeMahon had now taken three wickets for 42 runs. Sir.ipson had contributed 27 brightly.
Postles and Cleverley were together at the luncheon adjournment, with seven wickets down for 138. It is expected that MeMahon will be given a further bowling trial against his own eleven this afternoon. iScores: — B TEAM. —First Innings.
