HOLIDAY RUSH.
EXTRA SERVICES. INTER-ISLAND FERRIES. SPECIAL CHRISTMAS TRIPS. The indications are tliat there will be as many people travelling between the North and South Islands this holiday period as last year and possibly more. The Union Steam Ship Co. is fully prepared for the holiday rush, and extra services will be run to cope with the demand (announces the "Star-Sun.") I'Jie iirst extra trip will take place on Sunday, December 20, when the Wahine will sail from Lyttelton on the arrival of a through train from Dunedin, which is scheduled to leave Christchurch at 7.37 p.m. There will be a' train from Christchurch to the port leaving the city at 7.10 p.m. The Rangatira will come down from Wellington on the same night. The Rangatira will run the next special trip. She is due at Lyttelton at 6.50 a.m. on December 23, and will then make a daylfelit trip from Lyttelton to Wellington, sailing after the arrival of a train that will leave Christchurch at 7.35 a.m. In order to give Dunedin passengers the opportunity of taking a daylight trip the Railway _ Department is running a night train which is due in Christchurch at 7.18 a.m. .... Oil the same day the Wahine is due in Lyttelton at 5.30 p.m., making a daylight crossing of Cook Strait. Tlieie will be a special train to bring passengers up to Christchurch. Hie Wahine will return to Wellington in the ordinary way that night. On Christmas Eve the same proceduie will be followed. The Wahine will make a daylight crossing, and is due at Lyttelton at 5.30 p.m., and the Rangatira will sail from Lyttelton for Wellington. The Rangatira will leave Lyttelton on Sunday, December 27, after the arrival of a through train from Invercargill, which is scheduled to leave Christchurch for the port at 7.37 p.m. On this occasion the usual 7.10 p.m. boat train will not run. The Wahine will make a trip from Wellington the same night.
The attention of intending travellers is drawn to the fact that on Christmas night the local train from Christchurch to Lyttelton will leave at 0.50 p.m. instead of at 7.10 p.m., as is customary. An official of the company explained this morning that there are always bigger one-trip crowds from Wellington than from Lyttelton at holiday periods. The company had therefore arranged that the Rangatira would come down on the "big nights." It was expected that about 950 passengers would travel south on the rush nights.
