SUMMER BOWLING.

I CLUBS MAKE PROGRESS. jAN UNEXPECTED HOLIDAY. I AUSTRALIANS IX JANUARY. (By TRUXDLEE.) I . •>, ' Glorious sunshine was enjoyed for bowling on Saturday, marred only on a few greens by a purely local shower, quite visible from most greens in the suburbs, but fortunately not felt. Perfect conditions enabled the clubs to push on with their own competitions, particularly rinks, under the various titles, chiefly percentage fours and club fours. There were three official functions, in addition to these local matches and a few inter-clubs. St. Ilelier's and Glen Eden, following their usual custom of opening the season informally, with a more elaborate ceremony later in the season, en-, joyed delightful conditions for their gala day on Saturday. Many of those invited were prevented from attending by their own club engagements, but the centre executive always deny themselves this pleasure when official duties call themselves elsewhere, and a strong party attended at each green, where the usual congratulations and good wishes were exchanged. Taking advantage of the new custom of entirely giving up work on Saturdays, there was no difficulty in filling the Kaukapakapa green for a one-day tournament. Three rinks from Carlton formed the largest visiting contingent, but several of the suburban clubs were well represented, and also Ileleneville. The draw for the Christmas tournament was published on Friday and the programmes will be distributed in a few days. Although the experiment of including an intermediate fours at Christmas, in addition to Easter, did not meet with a liberal response when tried three years ago, eligible players will have the next best, a two-day tournament at Grey Lynn on January 1 and 2. This will probably suit a good many players better than at Christmas, for everybody is disengaged on those two days, but not free on the second and third days at Christmas. There will also be the usual open two-day tournaments at New Year at about half a dozen clubs. Tournaments This Week. The totally unexpected holiday to-day caused a rush to arrange one-day tourna-1 ments, but these will be almost limited to club functions, as there was no time to invite visitors. Eager competitors have the choice of two tournaments on each of the coming three days. An unusual gathering will take place on Wednesday. Former Canterbury residents will meet for lunch in the city, and again for a reunion in the evening, those who are bowlers spending the afternoon in a friendly game on the Mount Eden green. At each function 'they will be able to indulge in proud recollections of the Cathedral City, tlie city which commonly credited with being more English than England itself, but it is unlikely that any will confess why they left Christchurch to endure the "awful climate" of Auckland. Unlike Auckland, whose date of foundation is probably not known to 1 per cent of the population, seeing that we celebrate the national anniversary and not the local, the Canterbury date is known to every resident in that province, for they all know that the province dates ofiicially from December 10, ISoO, when the Charlotte' Jane arrived. . The Wellington Bowling Club is celebrating its jubilee this season, the principal functions being held last month, when the visitors included a rink from Wanganui, in charge of. the president, Mr. A. Crawford. The Wanganui Club dates from the same year, and the principal function will be held next Saturday. Wellington will return the compliment of last month in ,i handsome fashion, for the club will be officially represented by a rink comprising A. Fletcher (vice-presi-dent), C. R. Ingram (secretary), W. A. Parton (match committee) and H. ~G Mayer (president)'. Another interesting item from the capital is that the parent club will be represented at the Dominion tournament by seven rinks, 14 pairs and 16 singles. The annual pairs tournament for club secretaries and treasurers of the Wellington Centre took place last Thursday, fourteen clubs being represented. In the .filial the Scatoun officials. H. L. Green and (j. A. Haydcn, defeated Hataitai, J. C. McCrea and 15. Martin, but the tournament is a social institution, rather than a competitive, and it was instituted by Mr. Sam Potter to bring the officials together. He was cordially welcomed at the tea adjournment, and congratulated on originating such a happy "function. Queensland Bowlers Coming. The party of Queensland touripg bowlers will arrive ili- Auckland by the Awatea on the morning of Monday, January 11. T' ie itinerary has been prepared by the -New Zealand Trade Commissioner's -office in Sydnev, and they spend four weeks and two days in the Dominion, leaving Wellington tor Sydney by the Awatea on the evening of Tuesday, February 9. Apparently tlie only major sights omitted are the Wanganui River, Lake Waikaremoana, Mount Egmont, Mount Cook, Queenstown and the Franz Josef Glacier, but as each would entail an extra one to three days their inclusion in the limited time is impossible. The department must be 0911-, gratulated on the ■ scheme, for excessive | travelling is*' avoided, there is only one doubling back, Invercargill to Christchurch, and they have plenty of bowls and plenty of time for sight-seeing.
