GOLF TOURNEY.

JVUDDLEMORE'S DAY. EXCELLENT end to season. A. MURRAY BEST, PERFORMER. One hundred and twenty players took part in the open day staged at Middle-moi-j yesterday for the benefit of the local professionals. It was the last of such fixtures, which have been arranged this season, and it was a most fitting finish to the season. The field was a strong one; and in raturning the best aggregate of the day—l4B—for the 3G holes, A. Murray, the unattached professional. made some amends for his failure at the recent national tourney. He had two rounds of 74. Murray thus won the Auckland provincial professional championship which was contested for the first %. J. Moss was expected to be Murray's strongest rival, but a round of 80 in the morning spoilt Tiis chance. In the afternoon Moss was in his true form, and carded a 73, a score which was equalled during the day by only two other players, the amateurs Pax Smith and H. D. Brinsden. Moss made a nice start in the morning with 3, 4. 4, and reached the turn in 3S? He broke down at the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth holes, which required 5. 6, 6, a loss of six strokes to the scratch score. In the afternoon he was again out in 3S, and came home brilliantly in 35. Two Excellent Rounds. N". Bell played two excellent rounds of 70 and 75. and with three holes to go in the afternoon required fours to tie with Murray. A poor second at the sixteenth got him into trouble, and he carded a seven there, then to finish in fours. T. Galloway made a fine start with six fours in the morning round, and then slipped with a five'at the short seventh. An occasional six during the rest of the day saw his chances lost. Murray's victory .was due to two fine •halves coming home. In the morning he took 41 out and came home brilliantly j in 33, while in the afternoon lie was two strokes better going out (39), but slipped the two in comparison with the morning run home. Smith and Brinsden. It was fitting that Smith and Brinsden, the two outstanding Auckland amateurs, should dispute the 36-hole gross medal event for the amateurs. Smith put himself in -a fine position. with a 73 in the mofningj a round which he commenced with a three. In the afternoon he was not quite so sound, and required three strokes more. Brinsden left himself a difficult proposition when he took 79 in the morning. After lunch lie played a brilliant nine holes in 35, ' and was _ then level with Smith. Starting home with 3, 4 4, 3, lie had taken the lead, and wanted five' fours for a 69. However, he carded a five at the fifteenth and seventeenth, and slipped two more strokes with a 6 at the last. He was home in 3S for a round Brinsden deservedly won the Stablefoi d, which was played in conjunction with the afternoon round, Taken all round the scoring was not nearly as good as was expected, and none of the amateurs bettered their handicap on the day. This fact illustrated the fact that Middlemore is not the easy course that many consider it. Naturally, the greens .were fast and hard, which called for dexterity in playing shots ai the "Teens, and careful putting. ° 4.t the conclusion the prizes were presented bv Mr. A. Donald, club captain. Mr Basil Smith, sen., expressed the appreciation of the professionals ior the arrangements which had been made tor the day, and stressed the opportunity the open days gave both amateurs and professionals.
