WAIPA MEETING.
DARK SHADOW THE CUP. TONNEKRE WINS THE SPRINT. QUADROON'S XARROW VICTORY. Perfect weather prevailed for the summer meeting of the Waipa Racing Club at Te Awamutu on Saturday and the gathering was the most successful that has been held by the club for a long time. There was a large attendance and the course was in excellent order. During the day the sum of £25,503 was put through the machine, compared with £10,222 last year, an increase of £9341. Favourite Successful. Dark Shadow was installed a warm favourite for the Te Awamutu Cup, while Mungatoon and Jonathan also came in for a lot of attention. Mungatoon, Prince Colossus and Dark Shadow were the to break the line, but the last-named soon ran to the front, and passing the stands was leading by two lengths from Prince Colossus and Mungatoon, with a further two lengths to Jonathan, Scotland, Mazir and Master Brierly. They continued to race in this order until the. straight was reached, where Dark Shadow still held an advantage of a couple of lengths over Prince Colossus and Mungatoon, with Mazir, Jonathan, Scotland and Master Brierly racing in that order. Once in line Dark Shadow finished very resolutely, and he went on to gain a comfortable victory by a length and a half from Mazir, who finished well to beat Mungatoon by a neck. Jonathan was fourth, with Master Brierly, Prince Colossus and Scotland finishing as named. A Great Finish. Thirteen lined up for the Hack Cup, and backers went solidly for Quadroon, Royal Nation and Gay Streak. The favourite duly won. but only after shying after passing the distance post and losing some valuable ground. Trouvaille was quickest to find his feet, and ho led. when the field settled down from Rulette, Gay Streak, Valpai, and Gay Duke. Trouvaille and Rulette were on terms along the back, Quadroon being next, and coming Valpai, Gay Streak, Etcetera and Loombination. The order into the straight was Trouvaille, Quadroon, Rulette, Loombination and Gay Streak. Quadroon then came through, but near the finish shied and went out wide, but he was straightened up in time to win by a head from Trouvaille, with Vera Acre finishing solidly only a neck away. Royal Nation was fourth, and then came Rulette, Valpai, Gay Streak, and Loombination. First Fancy Unplaced. Little Artist, Gay Sister and Besiege came in for most attention in the Ohaupo Hack Handicap. Little Anglia lost a lot of ground at the start, and when the field was safely on its way, Little Artist and Sunny Downs were most prominent; -..However-, .BonniciSong soon went through, and she was the pilot along the back from Racemosus, Little Artist, Besiege, Gay Sister and Thur-. wind. Bonnie Song continued to make play across the top, and she led into the straight from Racemosus, Besiege, who was moving up sharply, Little Artist, Sunny Downs and Gay Sister. A rare tussle then ensued and in a fine finish, Besiege just got up to beat Bonnie Song by a short head, with Gay Sister half a length away. Little Artist, Thurwind and Racemosus were next to finish. All the Way. The Flying. Handicap attracted a field of ten, and in a good betting race most money was invested upon Galilee, Star Artist and Gay Seton. Tonnerre began smartly, and led early from Adalene, Galilee, Gay Seton and Star Artist. Across the top the order was ronnerre, Galilee, Adalene, Star Artist, Gay Seton, Sweet Rose, Mangukaha and Enge. Tonnerre was slightly clear as tlie field came round the turn, Galilee and Star Artist being next, and then coming Gay Sister, Adalene and Sweet Rose. Holding his own in the run to the judge, Tonnerre went on to win by half a length from Adalene, with Galilee a length and a half away third. Sweet Rose, Enge, Star Artist and Solaria were next. The Final Event. All went to the post for the Paterangi Handicap, and when the final figures were adjusted those in most demand were Namakia, Tradesman, and the winner, Miss Lu. When the field had Settled down along the back Namakia was in charge from Miss Lu, Sergia, King's Archer, Tradesman, Lady Diana and Musquil. Wahine Reihi then moved up fast and had headed Namakia at the straight entrance, where the pair were attended by Miss Lu, Sergia and Tradesman. Miss Lu stayed on well to gain the decision by a length and a half from Wahine Reihi, with Keith Lu finishing strongly in third place. Tradesman was fourth, and then came King s Archer, Musquil, Sergia and Tuahealie. Later results are:— TE AWAMOTU CUP of £300. One mile and a quarter and about 100 yds.
