That familiar article of male wear, the sliirt, was first worn in England during the pre-Norman period. Linen was the material of which it was made. Woollen shirts were introduced later. In the 10th century the wearing of a woollen shirt was reckoned a severe form of penance. Silken shirts were worn in Chaucer's time.
