MORE- POWER.
ARAPUNI ADDITIONS.
STEADY PROGRESS MADE. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. . Steady progress is reported in the work of providing for four extra turbines at the Arapuni hydro-electric works, and completion is expected before March.
At present only two extra turbines are being installed, the remaining pair being left till next year when the station will have a capacity of 85,000 kilowatts.
Additions to the powerhouse are proceeding apace, while the transformer station, when finished, will be twice as large as formerly. The recent spell of dry weather has greatly assisted concreting operations, a staff of over 200 men being engaged on the extensions. No. 1 unit, which failed last February owing to destruction of the winding, has been repaired and the four units are working satisfactorily.
Despite the huge increase in the demand for electricity three units are capable of handling all the requirements of the Auckland district, in addition to a portion of the Wellington district, and the present construction work is for the future and not the present.
